Hike + Picnic at Jack London Park

I remember taking field trips to Jack London Park in school when I was younger, but as I've gotten older, I've grown to truly appreciate the beauty of this natural space. I recommend starting your morning off by stopping into the Glen Ellen Market in town to pick up deli sandwiches and snacks before heading to Jack London Park for a hike and picnic lunch. The park contains over 29 miles of trails throughout the 1,400 acre property and I love checking out the stunning views and historic buildings that belonged to famous writer, Jack London, when I visit.

Tour Benziger Family Winery

I first discovered the Biodynamic Vineyard Tram Tour at Benziger Family Winery when I was lucky enough to get a guided tour from Mike Benziger himself on a field trip for one of the classes I took while enrolled in the Wine Business program at Sonoma State University. Not only can you stop in to taste their delicious wines, ranging from Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon, but you also receive a fantastic education on their biodynamic farming practices and the insect pathways they've created across their property. Benziger takes caring for the land to a whole other level and it's an incredible sight to see.

Chocolate Tasting at Wine Country Chocolates

Wine Country Chocolates is just down the road from Benziger Family Winery and makes for a great stop if you're craving something sweet during a break between wine tastings. The Sonoma County-based business operates chocolate tasting rooms in Glen Ellen and on the Sonoma Plaza, and it's such a treat to be greeted with a sample of their ganache flavor of the day when you walk into their stores. They specialize in wine-infused truffles and although all of the chocolates are delicious, the Zinfandel and Salted Caramel truffles happen to be my favorites!

Sample Pinot Noir at Talisman Wines

Talisman Wines' tasting room, located in the heart of Glen Ellen, is a can't-miss destination for any Pinot Noir lover. Open Thursday through Monday from 12-5pm, Talisman offers a cozy, sit down experience where you taste several wines carefully selected from special vineyard sites. Bottlings are typically 200-300 cases, making these wines super small production releases, and the Pinots from Red Dog Vineyard on Sonoma Mountain and the Weir Vineyard in the Yorkville Highlands are always standouts for me.

Eat Dinner at Glen Ellen Star

Glen Ellen Star is true California wine country dining at it's finest. Star is perhaps best known for mouthwatering wood-fired pizzas and house-made ice creams, and Chef Ari Weiswasser is a culinary genius, utilizing fresh produce from gardens in surrounding Sonoma County to create his signature dishes. My favorite main course is the Rigatoni with chanterelles, pumpkin butter, pepitas, pomegranate, and house-made ricotta. Be sure to stop in on Neighborhood Night to take advantage of their two course menu for $36 and complimentary corkage, in addition to the a la carte menu. Don't forget to make a reservation in advance though - Seating is very limited!
