5 Can't-Miss Tasting Rooms on the Sonoma Plaza

With over thirty tasting rooms in downtown Sonoma, it can be challenging to decide which ones to visit. Allow me to save you some time (and a few hangovers) by sharing five of my favorite Sonoma Plaza tasting rooms.

The Sonoma Plaza is the epicenter of Sonoma wine country and with a variety of fun activities to partake in, it's easy to see why tourists from all over the world are eager to visit. From the picturesque Sonoma City Hall to the lush park and historic downtown shops and restaurants, the Sonoma Plaza is a fantastic destination in California wine country.

Wine tasting on the Sonoma Plaza is a convenient option for visitors to the area because tasting rooms are all concentrated in one place and chances are, your hotel is nearby. You won't need to worry about hiring a driver to shuttle you from winery to winery or making someone sit out on the fun to be DD. Most of these tasting rooms are small production operations making fantastic, hard-to-find wines! Here's a round up of my top 5 favorites:

Kamen Estate Wines

Kamen Estate Wines is named for founder and owner, Robert Mark Kamen, who is best known as the screenwriter behind The Karate Kid and Taken films. Kamen has a sleek, modern tasting room located on the southeast end of the plaza and their lineup includes Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon. All of Kamen’s wines are estate-grown on their 280-acre Moon Mountain District property that is certified both biodynamic and organic. With Phil Coturri as Viticulturist, Mark Herold as Winemaker, and Neil Mason as Assistant Winemaker, Kamen has a talented, well-respected team and it definitely shows in the wines.

Tip: Kamen offers a Vineyard Tour and Tasting experience at their Moon Mountain estate with incredible views of the Mayacamas Mountains and San Francisco Bay. Highly recommend! Book here.

Sojourn Cellars

Sojourn Cellars is just a few steps away from Kamen, but they offer a different tasting experience from their neighbor. My friend, Jessica, described it best when she said tasting at Sojourn reminded her of "drinking wine in someone’s living room." This seated, one hour tasting allows you the time to dig into Sojourn's wines at your own pace and indulge. Winemaker, Erich Bradley, focuses on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for Sojourn, sourcing from notable vineyards, such as Gap’s Crown and Sangiacomo.

Tip: Sojourn hosts tastings by appointment, but if you visit their website on your phone and click "Visit Us," there’s a button to "Schedule a Tasting Today."

Three Sticks Wines

Three Sticks Wines resides within the Vallejo-Castañeda Adobe, which was built in 1842 by Senator Vallejo and was lovingly restored when Three Sticks took over the space. Three Sticks produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and they own Durell and Gap’s Crown Vineyards, which gives them the best access to amazing fruit. Plus the expertise of Director of Winemaking, Bob Cabral, doesn’t hurt either.

I'm always blown away by the level of thoughtfulness and detail the Three Sticks team puts into their guests' visits. They truly want visitors to spend time at the Adobe and enjoy the space they have worked so hard to create. Three Sticks is my favorite hidden gem on the Sonoma Plaza - I never want to leave the Adobe and am currently dreaming of the next time Three Sticks Pinot Blanc is in my glass.

Tip: Three Sticks has their own private parking lot, which is worth its weight in gold. Just give them a call to get buzzed in when you arrive for your reservation and park in their lot worry-free during your tasting.

Pangloss Cellars

A visit to Pangloss is an experience you realize will "wow" you the very moment you step foot inside the tasting room. Their first home was in the small town of Glen Ellen, before moving to their current space on Napa Street. The Pangloss hospitality team consistently provides top notch experiences and there's even an olive tree growing in the center of the bar. This is winemaker, Erich Bradley's, second mention on this list, but Pangloss's portfolio includes Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon. My personal favorite is the members-only Chenin Blanc! Pangloss stays open until 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays, making it a great place to grab a glass before dinner.

Tip: If you’re interested in delving into the art of food and wine pairing, Pangloss offers FIVE delicious food and wine experiences, including “White and Caviar,” “Burgundy and Cheese,” and “Seasons in Sonoma.” For more information, click here.

WALT Wines

WALT Wines' tasting room is located in a cozy, former residential home on the northwestern corner of the Sonoma plaza, across from The Girl and the Fig restaurant. WALT is the sister winery to Hall Wines in St. Helena, and they specialize in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They source grapes from vineyards in Willamette Valley, Anderson Valley, Sonoma County, Napa Valley, and the Central Coast, providing them with high quality fruit from well-known vineyards like Gap’s Crown, Sierra Mar, and Clos Pepe. I'm always impressed with how consistent Walt's wines are and can count on their Pinots to knock it out of the park each time I visit. WALT is an awesome spot to wine taste outside and soak up some sunshine on the plaza on a beautiful day.

Tip: WALT hosts trivia night every Thursday night from 6:30-8pm, featuring Walt Wines and bites for only $5 admission! What are you doing this Thursday?
