Top 5 Fave Tasting Rooms on the Healdsburg Plaza

Healdsburg may not be nearly as well known as its neighbors to the south, Napa and Sonoma, but there's certainly no shortage of excellent wineries to choose from for your wine tasting adventures.

I live in Healdsburg and love exploring the downtown plaza - However, if it's your first time here or you aren't super familiar with the town, it's easy to get overwhelmed by all of the options, so here are my top five fave picks for tasting rooms on the Healdsburg Plaza.

Portalupi Wine

Founded by husband/wife team, Tim Borges (winemaker) and Jane Portalupi, this Cal-Ital tasting room is known for their Italian varietals and fun events, like "Italian pizza and wine." Their motto is "Made in California with Italian parts" and the lineup includes Zinfandel, Barbera, Charbono, and even a Sparkling Barbera.

Wine runs in the family because when Jane's grandmother immigrated to California from Italy, she opened a grocery store where customers could bring empty milk bottles to fill up with wine and take home to enjoy. Today, Portalupi makes their Vaso di Marina trio of a White Wine, Rosato, and Red Wine in refillable milk bottles, so visitors to the tasting room can do the same.

Lioco Wine Company

Lioco Wine Company is the newest tasting room to open up and a fantastic addition to the Healdsburg Plaza. Owned and operated by the Licklider family, Lioco's vibe is cool and coastal, focusing on wines from Santa Cruz, Sonoma, and Mendocino. The portfolio is centered around Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Carignan, with a Valdiguie thrown in for fun - An unusual find here! Their tasting room team is friendly and the space has windows that open up to Matheson Street, so you can hear the hustle and bustle of town as you sip these delicious wines.

Idlewild Wines

Tucked away off Plaza Street, Idlewild focuses on Piedmontese single varietals and blends made by winemaker, Sam Bilbro. Bilbro comes from a family of winemakers and crafts varieties, such as Cortese, Arneis, and Nebbiolo, which is a fun way to shake things up in the land of endless Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With provisions to pair, like cheeses, meats, almonds with truffle salt, and olives, Idlewild is a fabulous spot to meet up with a friend for a glass of wine after work, if you're a local. They also frequently host fun pop ups with local foodie favorites, Maison Porcella and Houtskool Dumplings.

Aperture Cellars + Devil Proof Vineyards

Rather than the wines of Aperture Cellars and Devil Proof Vineyards being poured in a typical tasting room, they're located within the Andy Katz Gallery, perched high above the Healdsburg Plaza shops. Wines for both labels are created by winemaker, Jesse Katz, formerly of Lancaster Estate in the Chalk Hill appellation. Devil Proof keeps things simple and produces two distinct Malbecs - Whereas Aperture's portfolio has more variety, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Red Blends, and primarily Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tastings are available by reservation only and they host a private, seated experience with cheese and chocolate to complement. These wines are five star showstoppers and well worth setting up an appointment.

Banshee Wines

Simply put, Banshee Wines is hipster heaven and a hell of a fun time. I've spent hours at Banshee sipping Pinot with friends and relaxing in their living room-like setting. The tasting room has leather couches and chairs to sprawl out on, with a communal table if you're feeling social. Banshee produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast, and you can't forget about their easy-drinking Mordecai Red Blend. I've been known to leave here with a couple mags of Rosé in hand and highly recommend you do the same.
